Vyaghryadi Kashayam is one among many herbal remedies available for effectively combating Cough, Bronchitis and asthma. It is a unique combination of disease-alleviating, disease-modifying and immune-modulating herbs.

Vyaghri: Solanum xanthocarpum –  It is a very ideal herb used as a remedy for disorders affecting voice. Sore Throat is one of the main complaints in respiratory ailments. It is also individually prescribed in cough, wheeze, bronchitis, asthma, flu and common cold

Shunthi: Zingiber officinaleGinger is an effective herb used in cough, cold, wheeze, voice disorders and asthma. Ayurvedic treatments for osteoarthritis with special ref to osteoarthritis knee, knee pain

Janu Vasti..a treatment of ayurveda...provides a simple and still very effective relief of Pain Knee especially that which is caused due to Osteo Arthritis. It relieves pain and stiffness and easens movements at the knee joint. Meanwhile it also strengthens the joint, muscles and soft tissues around, improves circulation and enables you to resume back your work and activities.
What is Janu Vasti and how it is done?
It is a simple procedure in which a compartment of flour (black gram powder) is constructed around the painful knee joint, adhered with the same flour and kept in position. Medicated oil which is prescribed by the doctor so as to suit the condition is made luke warm and poured into the compartment. The procedure is carried out for 30 to 40 minutes. After the prescribed time of therapy both the oil and flour are removed from contact. As per the choice of the physician, the procedure shall be followed by a hot water fomentation or a Patra Pinda Sweda(Leaves of medicinal plants are tied in a cloth in the form of a bolus; heated to tolerable heat on a pan kept on the stove and applied to the painful part) is given. This gives an ashtonishing relief for those suffering from knee pain arthritis or osteo arthritis knee which has not been under control since many days or months. It is usually done in a course of 5 to 7 days as required or as prescribed. They may be repeated giving short intervals particularly in those who have repetitive joint pains so as to have a constant and sustained effect.
Where it should not be done?
*Rheumatoid Arthritis of the knee joint.
*Pain associated with fracture and dislocation.
In conditions of pain knee or osteo arthritis knee of mild to moderate severity, or frequent joint pains or in the work patterns or jobs which demand standing for long time or walking for long distances, the jonts will give way early due to constant and repetitive stress and strain. In such conditions Janu Vasti can be taken as a preventive treatment also. It helps avoid the joint related problems and keeps your joints healthy. In such conditions a course of treatment might not be required. As per the suggestion of the doctor Janu Vasti prophylactically can be taken for a couple of days at the week ends, repeating it once in every 2 to 3 months.

Keep yourself fresh and rejuvenated by taking bath

Taking bath regularly keeps you healthy, fresh, energetic and rejuvenated for the whole day and for life is a statement made in Ayurveda centuries back. All of us take bath daily as a formality and as a routine part of our daily schedules. But the medical importance of taking bath has not been emphasized and explained anywhere other than the oldest holistic medical science…Ayurveda. Here we shall be discussing about the holistic and medical horizons of bathing.

What are the benefits of bathing?
“Deepanam vrishyamaayushyam snaanamojo bala pradam
Kandoo mala shrama sweda tandraa trut daaha paapmanut”
*Deepana – Enhances the digestive fire(capacity) and regularizes metabolism. This property enables us to digest our food properly. This may probably brought about by improvisation of circulation & retention of heat after bath.
*Vrishyam – Aphrodisiac effect. Gives sexual competence to an individual. Taking showers before sex always enhances the performance and keeps us fresh and spirited during the act and allows us to enjoy sex to the maximum – both physically and mentally.
Bathing relaxes the mind and body from the effects of day long stress and fills in enthusiasm and interest in sex.
*Aayushyam – Enhances life span. It means to say that it fills in a new energy and life in all the cells.
*Oorja & bala pradam – Provides energy and strength. This is achieved when the bath alleviates tiredness and fatigue enabling an individual to get actively involved in physical and mental activities.
*Relieves one from kandoo(itching), mala(dirt), shrama(fatigue), sweda(sweating), tandra(stupor), trut(thirst), daaha(burning sensation) and paapma(effects of unwholesome and sinful acts)

Effects of morning bath:
“Praata snaanam cha paapaharanam duswapna pradhwamsanam shouchasya aayatanam malaapaharanam samvardhanam tejasaam
Roopa dhyotakaram shareera sukhadam kaamaagni sandeepanam streenaam manmatha gaahanam shramaharam snaane dashaite gunaaha”
The below mentioned 10 fold benefits are achieved after snana(bath):
Relieves one from paapma(effects of unwholesome and sinful acts)
Destroys the effects of bad dreams and nightmares.
Source of cleanliness.
Removes dirt and dust.
Improves appetite.
Improves color and complexion.
Gives freshness to the body.
Improves sexual vigour and libido.
Enhances sexual interest in the women too.
Relieves one from fatigue.

Benefits of having cold and hot bath:
*Cold bath helps alleviate Raktapitta(haemorrhagic disorders).
*Hot bath increases strength of an individual and pacified the aggravated vata and kapha. It provides strength only when it is used to bathe the body excluding the head. It means to tell that hot water should not be used for head bath. If done it not only destroys the strength but also causes harm to the hairs and eyes. When vata and kapha doshas are vitiated luke warm water can be used for head bath.
“Asheetena ambhasa snaanam payaha paanam yuva striyaha
Etadvoo maanavaaha pathyam snigdamalpam cha bhojanam”
As quoted by Ashwini Devas (or the divine physicians of Hindu mythology who are rated as the first ever physicians by Ayurveda) to King Bhoja “Bathing with hot water, drinking milk, sex with a young virgin and food in lesser quantities which is admixed with ghee are always beneficial for you” These can be considered as beneficial for the whole human race…for all of us.
***Aamalaki or Embalica Officianalis called amla is said to be one of the best rejuvenators in Ayurveda – when taken as an internal medicine. The same is advised to be used for bathing in Yoga Ratnakara(Ayurvedic text)
“Yaha sadaa aamalakaihi snaanam karoti sa vinishchitam
Valee palita nirmukto jeevadvarshashatam naraha”
One who regularly takes bath using amalaki admixed water or by applying paste of amalaki will be devoid of vali(ageing and wrinkling) and palita(premature maturing of hairs) and will have a healthy life span of hundred years.

Conditions contraindicated for bathing:
Those suffering from fever, diarrhea, diseases related to eye and ears, flatulence, cold and congestion, diseases caused by vitiated vayu and indigestion should not take bath. It should not be taken immediately after taking food too.

Wipe your body thoroughly after bath:
“Snaanasyaanantaram samyak vastrena tanu marjanam
Kaanti pradam shareerasya kandu twak roga naashanam”
After bath one should wipe his body using a clean cloth thoroughly. By doing so one gets relieved of itching and skin related ailments. The complexion of the skin increases as a result of wiping.

Bathing is a part of our health and life style…customary…traditional…and more of culture…

For more such life style tips and for a better health care through the holistic Ayurveda..

AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS AND THEIR MANAGEMENT IN AYURVEDA....

Immunity: It is the body’s way of identifying its enemies and destroying them.It is a naturally existing phenomenon in everybody. The enemies may be in the form of bacteriae, viruses, toxins, cancer cells and transfused blood or grafted tissues from another person or species.atahey are called antigens. The immune system of the body produces antibodies which destroy these harmful substances.

Auto Immune Disorders: Auto immunity is that in which the body fails in identifying self from nonself i.e the system fails in differentiating the antigens from the healthy body tissues. As a result the immune system attacks and destroys the healthy body tissues. As a result a few disorders are caused and they are called Auto immune disorders.

Causes: Genetic, Infections, Some drugs etc

Effect of Auto immune disorders:
*Destruction of one or more types of the body tissues.
*Abnormal growth of an organ.
*Abnormal changes in organ functions.

Organs and tissues commonly affected by Auto immune disorders:
Blood cells and vessels, Connective tissues, Muscles and joints, Skin, Endocrine Glands

Examples of Auto immune disorders: –Pernicious Anaemia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Dermatomyositis, Systemic Lupus Erythmatosus, Type 1 Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Myasthenia Gravis, Grave’s disease, Celiac disease etc

Symptoms: The symptoms of Auto immune disorders are tissue, organ and disease specific. They may range from a mild fever to a severe disabling arthritis.More than one Auto immune disorder can afflict an individual at a time.

Ayurveda and Auto immune disorders:
The concept of Auto immune disorders seems to be a ‘never new’ concept for the Ayurvedic science.
The basic humoral factors of the body i.e the doshas which have a natural tendency to invade and the tissues of the body i.e dhatus which have a natural tendency to resist the invasion, coexist in the same body without afflicting each other. But the concept of Dosha Dooshya Sammurchana in which the disturbed doshas invade its own system i.e the weakened dhatus- indicate the earliest and oldest explanation of Auto immunity.

The information of the self destructive mechanism of the body i.e auto immunity can be obtained and inferred from the similar explanations given in the concepts of Ama,Kapha kshaya or vikruta kapha Agni dushti and Ojo visramsa.
ü Agni – the internal fire or the normal metabolism is an essential factor in the maintainance of health and integrity of the body. The same when disturbed gives rise to ama.
ü Ama is an endotoxin which has a multifactorial origin including disturbed metabolism. It afflicts all the tissues and makes them susceptible for many disorders.
ü Similarly the deflection from normalcy and integrity of Ojus – an essence of all the tissues and severe vitiation of kapha contribute towards the manifestation of Auto immune disorders.
In treatment we focus on the basic correction of these factors.

Goals of Treatment:
v To reduce the symptoms
v To control the Auto immune process
v Maintain the bodys ability to fight diseases

Ayurvedic Interventions:
With Auto immune disorders becoming very common now a days and many treatment modalities failing in tackling them, people are resorting to Ayurveda for effective management. Ayurveda doesn’t disappoint its clients aswell. The below said are the important interventions in tackling the Auto immune disorders:
Ø Shodhana/Panchakarma: Procedures to cleanse and detoxify the system.
Ø Rasayana(Vyadhi hara) Therapy: To supress and balance the immunity and later to strengthen it.Helps rejuvenation.
Ø Bahya Upakramas or Physical Therapies: Like Abhyanga, Swedana, Kizhis, Pizhichil, Udwartanam etc.
Ø Relaxation Therapies: Like Dharas, Moordni taila etc
Ø Counselling and Life style management
Ø Administration of effective medecines and diet.
